The Benefits of (Boetje’s) Mustard!

More than a few of our friends have told us, both on Facebook and in person, that Boetje’s Mustard clears their sinuses!  They’ve often said it half-jokingly, but the truth is that our spicy mustard is a tasty way to clear out stuffiness.  In fact, you may not realize it, but mustard and mustard seed have many known health benefits!

Mustard seeds are high in anti-oxidants and are also known to have anti-inflammatory properties.   They contain Omega3 fatty acids which help lower cholesterol, making your heart healthier.  Various combinations of mustard seeds mixed into a paste or liquid can be used to induce vomiting in case of ingesting a toxic substance, and some have made poultices used to combat colds or other illnesses. Consuming mustard is even one treatment suggested for combating headaches, although we’re not sure how much you need to consume to stop a migraine.

If you are watching your weight, Boetje’s stone-ground Dutch mustard is a perfect addition to your menu, because brown mustard has far fewer calories than yellow mustard.  There are no carbohydrates and next to zero fat in brown mustard too.

Probably one of the most exciting health benefits of eating Boetje’s Mustard is the potential cancer-fighting qualities of spicy brown mustard.   According to a Sept 2002 study, research shows a correlation between “the consumption of isothiocyanates in brown mustard and other foods with a reduced risk of cancer in mice. The Linus Pauling Institute notes that isothiocyanates also may slow or stop the progression of cancers such as those that affect the liver, esophagus, colon, lung and small intestine.”  (You can read more about this over at LiveStrong.com.)

So give yourself a health boost and spread some more Boetje’s on that next sandwich!
